What is Proxy?
A proxy is a server that performs tasks on behalf of another server, such as distributing load, filtering access, blocking or adding content on a website, carrying traffic, holding copies of files and providing a service to substitute for a server that might otherwise get overloaded. A transparent proxy server performs its task without altering the carried data.
Definitions
Although the official definition for a transparent proxy is that it should not alter data, many proxy programs that filter data are advertised as being transparent. In this usage, the vendor intends their definition to portray that the user is unaware that the data was modified or provided by a proxy, not that the data originated with the contacted server.
Examples
Because a truly transparent proxy server is not expected to alter the data, the only implementations that can be said to be transparent are acting as gateways and routers. To satisfy the definition, a transparent proxy would not have any involvement with the data being transmitted, only carrying it so that the request is fulfilled by the target server.
Purpose
A transparent proxy is different from a router because it can make decisions about routing to a target server based on the load of the target server. A proxy might save a page or a file that was requested from a server. The next time that page is requested, it sends it back from its own store rather than fetching it from the server again.
